Immigrant Resources Center Bi-Weekly Briefings

The ILRC will host one-hour briefings every other week during the first six months of 2025 to provide legal service providers and advocates updates about changes to immigration policy and practice. These Immigration Briefings will provide overviews of new announcements and policies to keep everyone working in the field updated and informed. Please note that these sessions will not be legal trainings or case rounds, but a space to learn more about critical developments. The briefings will occur every other Wednesday from 10:00 – 11:00 am PST / 1:00 – 2:00 pm EST beginning Wednesday, January 22, 2025. National Council of Nonprofits Free webinar for nonprofits on responding to federal grant cancellations. The webinar will cover how grants are being cancelled, steps grantees should take to prepare for the risk of cancellation, and considerations for organizations after cancellation. The NCN Public Policy team will also share actions that you can take now to advocate for your nonprofit organizations. Presented by Amanda Fuchs Miller, President of Seventh Street Strategies and has more than three decades of experience working inside and outside of government. As President of Seventh Street Strategies, she works with nonprofit organizations, foundations, and higher education institutions to provide advocacy, policy, oversight, and communications support. National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild. Visa revocations have been in the public eye recently as the Trump administration moved to revoke international student visas of students who exercised their freedom of speech. Although the government has reversed course after suffering major losses in federal courts across the United States, it is important for immigration practitioners to know the proper process for visa revocations. It is also important for immigration practitioners to understand the proper process for rescission of lawful permanent resident status. The faculty will discuss the law, regulations, and processes regarding visa revocations and rescission of lawful permanent resident status. The intended audience is immigration lawyers. Instruction in  the categorical approach, the primary approach immigration authorities use to determine when criminal convictions trigger immigration consequences; winning post-conviction relief in immigration court; defending against crime of violence-based grounds;  strategies for protecting the rights of noncitizen clients in the criminal system;  interior ICE raids, and § 1325 prosecutions. Specifically designed for nonprofit immigrant and refugee education programs that are facing funding shortfalls due to the freezing or cancellation of their government grants. While attempts to restore funding work their way through litigation in many cases, programs are searching for financial support from alternative sources. The session will offer strategies for outreach to foundations, local businesses and associations, and strategies for donor development. The presenter, Shawn Chakrabarti, served as an education specialist for the U.S. Office of Citizenship; founder of a Washington school that is a model for immigrant family education; has significant expertise using data and evidence-based research to secure funding for nonprofits. April 10 & 11 2025  2:00 – 5:00 PM (ET) Rights & Resistance: Protecting Your Communities and Responding to Immigration Raids

Two day free zoom program presented by the National Immigration Project. Equips organizers, advocates, and impacted community members with the knowledge to navigate and respond to immigration enforcement in their communities. Day 1 includes a brief primer on Fourth Amendment rights, including what happens after an arrest and how it may lead to  release or deportation and review of emergency planning. Day 2 includes summarizing current enforcement trends, discussing key aspects of responding to immigration enforcement, such as managing secure  hotlines, recruiting and managing volunteers, humanitarian support after raids, referrals for legal representatives, and best practices for conducting legal intakes. This session (presented by the National Immigration Law Center) will cover systems for addressing immediate immigration needs post-raid, including establishing a hotline for families, identifying their immediate needs, best practices for intake and data entry, locating detained workers, liaising with consulates, and working with immigration attorneys on bond and deportation defense. The session will also highlight the importance of on-the-ground coordination, especially in the first chaotic days after the raid, and the need for consistent communication and support to both detainees and their families.Click here to register.

Digital Security 101 Training for Immigrant Justice Organizers with Just Futures Law. In this online training, we will review digital security risks for communities targeted by ICE surveillance and share tips to keep our communities and our organizing safe – online and offline. This is a beginner-level digital security training for organizers and advocates working for immigrant rights. Note: If you joined us for our Digital Security 101 training in 2024, please note this training will cover the same content. This training from the National Immigration Law Center will focus on developing strategies for responding to workplace raids, grounded in community-centered organizing and long-term power-building.
